Yesterday’s magnitude 7.7 earthquake killed two women, injured another and two minors, damaged homes, schools, shopping malls, medical units, government offices, temples and bridges and caused landslides on roads in Colima, Michoacán. Jalisco and Nayarit, according to reports from state civil protection authorities.
The governor of Colima, Indira Vizcano, reported that a woman was killed when a wall of a Coppel store fell on her in Manzanillo.
In that port, the roof of a gym on the top floor of the Punto Bahia shopping center collapsed and killed a woman, whose body was rescued after several hours of labor with the support of a canine pair.
In Tacomán, a gas tank exploded and injured a woman and two children aged 11 years and 5 months, who were treated at a clinic in Villa de Alvarez.
Landslide on the highway
The movement was centered in Colcomán, Michoacan, on the Colima-Manzanillo highway, at the height of the La Salada area, in the municipality of Ixtalahuacan, as well as on the Villa de Alvarez-Minatitlan and Comala-La Becerrera highways. which were partially blocked.
In the city of Colima, authorities reported damage to 11 hospitals and clinics, the state government headquarters, the C5i Building, the Minor Basilica Cathedral, and Sandera and Zentralia shopping malls.
In Villa de Alvarez, the town hall building was damaged, as was the People’s Theater in the fairgrounds.
Dozens of hospitals affected
In Michoacán, 20 hospitals and health centers, homes, roads and highways were affected in the municipalities of Colcomán, Aquila and Cohuaia, reported Jorge Romero, the civil protection coordinator.
Medical units in Pátzcuaro, Zacapu, Apatzingan, Aguililla, and Cohuana, as well as hospitals in Uruapan, Zacapu, Apatzingan, Puruandiro, Cheran, Maruata, Ciudad Hidalgo, Sahuayo, Maravatió, and Colcomnaya suffered structural damage.
At the head of the Colcoman, the shrine of Santo Santiago Apostol was cracked and the walls and roof collapsed; Dozens of houses were damaged in the center and the Colegio de Bachilleras. In Patzcuaro, the walls of the municipal palace, the Basilica of Our Lady of Health and the offices of the health jurisdiction were cracked. In La Hucana, a landslide hit the walls of the parish of Nuestra Señora del Rosario.
On the Patzcuaro-Lázaro Cárdenas highway, a large rock fell from a hill and partially blocked the asphalt.
The Ministry of Education has ordered the suspension of classes in Colcomán, Aquila, Chiniquilla, Arteaga, Aguililla and Apatzingan, while the buildings are assessed.
Damage to temples and houses
Two temples in Guadalajara suffered masonry collapse. Schools in that city and university centers in Tlajomulco and Puerto Vallarta were damaged. The most affected municipalities were Toliman and Zapotitlan de Vadillo, with homes and schools damaged. Some walls fell in Ciudad Guzmán.
In Tepic, Nayarit, the highest part (spire) of the north tower of the cathedral collapsed and pieces of stone material, quarry and cement fell on the street.
In Interlomas, in Huixquilucan, Mexico state, two girders of a vehicular bridge connecting the Bosque Real residential complex to Magnocentro Avenue were separated from the structure, reported the mayor, Romina Contreras, who ordered the road closed as a precaution. Awaiting the official verdict.
